Hallowe’en 2009
Today was our sparrows first Hallowe’en, and we think they had fun. We carved a pumpkin (to look like Elmo, who we all know is the God of Toddlers), ate Pumpkin Yum, dressed like witches, wore our bear hats, wandered the neighbourhood, and raised a ruckus. It was a good holiday.
More pictures, below:
The ladies LOVE their pumpkin. G is wearing head to toe black, because, as Daddy (who dressed her) explained, she was in costume as Boris (our recently departed cat). All hail Elmo! All hail Elmo!
We did not put the kids in costumes this year, but they did spend the day in these little witch shirts. And their yoga pants, because all witches appreciate a stretchy pant, in case of strenuous incanting.
The kids got Hallowe’en cards from G-squared, AKA Mrs. David Yurman, and we let them open their own mail. And by open, we mean ‘eat’.
Poor Jack does not understand why we aren’t living on a large farm somewhere, just the two of us and her, perhaps spending our days lying around on giant featherbeds on a screened in porch, napping the day away. Luckily, M is oblivious to the Saddest Dog In The World behind her, as she chews open her mail.
Here are the photos you don’t see: the ones depicting the WAILING and CRYING and TORTURE that happened when we took their half eaten cards out of their mouths and suggested they play with real toys, instead. But everyone perked up at the idea of walking around the neighbourhood. They are too young to trick or treat, but we wanted them to see the older kids dressed up, and admire our neighbours ghoulish decorations. So we transformed our witches into bears. BEARS! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
Our neighbourhood is a really pretty mix of older buildings and homes, all wrapped around a city park, so we walked the perimeter of the park to watch the fun. I love this house so much, because they really go all out for the holidays, and also, because seriously? How could you not love this house?
This isn’t actually their front door – its the side entrance, but it fronts the busier of two streets (its a corner house), so they opened up the french doors and went to town on the decorating. That’s a coffin up there on the porch, and a ghoulish devil leaning out the window. And the candy-hander-outers were their cute kids, dressed up and very sweet.
We didn’t actually collect any candy this year. Our rule is, ‘not until you are old enough to carry your own bag’, but we did enjoy seeing the older kids trick or treat. And to see what people did to decorate. Lots of CSI-themed decor in the ‘hood. That’s a woman’s leg, in a boot, peeking up out ofthe leaves, and her arms.
Beware of ghouls. Also, possums!
But mostly… beware of BEARS!
G. gives the clap of approval to Hallowe’en.
Those sweet little bears didn’t scare us even a little bit. Grrrrrr.
How cute can they get!
